I am running for re-election to continue to be a check on the Republican majority and bring the focus back to what's important to our community.

It’s time for us to bring North Carolina home, and restore our reputation as the beacon of the South. And that’s just what I'm here to do. I’m running because I know I am the right person to continue representing the needs and values of our region in the General Assembly.

Mary is an effective Freshman Legislator.

  • Mary introduced a common sense reform bill that helped small businesses across the state grow. By assembling bipartisan co-sponsors for her bill, Mary was one of few freshmen legislators from the minority party who succeeded in passing a bill in the house.
  • Mary was part of the bipartisan coalition that came together to pass HB13, a temporary fix that delayed the implementation of dramatically lower class size mandates in K-3. Mary believes we shouldn't sacrifice Science, Art, and PE programs to satisfy a misguided one-size-fits-all mandate.
  • Mary prioritized the ever-growing opioid crisis in our state by introducing the Opioid Prescription & Treatment Opt Out Act. This bill will give people and their primary care physicians an Advance Medical Directive that automatically requests non-opioid treatments from all health care providers. At the 2017 National Conference of State Legislators, Mary consulted with colleagues from Massachusetts and Alaska, where this option is already available to patients.
